Muslim marriages are conducted based on Islamic traditions. But the bridal attire need not be "traditional", i.e., there is no requirement of any particular attire for the couple getting married (dress need not be of a certain color for instance). While many brides opt for the traditional bridal attire from their ethnic group, some other brides are opting for East-West bridal designs.

Moroccan Argan Oil - The Latest Skin Care Craze That Actually Works

How Brides Can Use Argan Oil as a Pre-Bridal Beauty Treatment

Around the year 2007, a skin care ingredient exploded into the skin care consciousness of people. This was the Argan oil. The Argan oil comes from the Argan tree that is native to southwestern Morocco. It is a hardy and thorny tree that adapts well to the harsh and dry climate of Morocco. The Argan Oil comes from the nuts that grow from the tree. The nuts are collected, and the oil is obtained by de-shelling the nuts, then pressing the seeds to obtain the oil.

Traditionally, Argan oil is used by Moroccan Berbers for a variety of treatments. Moroccan Berber women smooth it onto their bellies during pregnancy to minimize stretch marks formation; to relieve dry skin; to moisturize cuticles; and to condition dry ends of hair. They also rub in onto babies.

Today, we know that the Argan Oil contains twice the amount of vitamin E as olive oil and is rich in anti-oxidants. Eight essential fatty acids help prevent moisture loss in the skin and its amazing anti-aging properties are well documented.

Since Argan oil production is still tedious, and the tree is located in Moroccan local cooperatives, preventing mass production (but benefiting the poor local communities - which is great), Argan oil is rare and expensive.

While there are many mass produced products on the markets these days containing Argan oil as one of many ingredients, we suggest getting your hands on Pure Argan Oil.

Pure Argan Oil Uses for Brides Pre-Wedding Skin Care Routine

1) Soften Facial Skin

Argan oil is known for having a high content of unsaturated fatty acids. It has more than shea butter so its an ideal facial moisturizer. Smooth a few drops of Pure Argan Oil onto your face every evening - remember to do this only after you remove your make-up, cleanse and tone your facial skin. Leave the Pure Argan Oil to be absorbed for 3 hours or so. If you want, you can leave it in overnight.

2) Lightens Scars and Brighten Complexion

Pure argan oil also can lighten acne scars and blemishes. It also brightens the skin. After regular use, your face will look brighter and fresh.

3) Intensive Hair Treatment

If you are prone to dry hair, or split ends, then you can rub Pure Argan Oil into your hair once a week. Coat every strand with the Oil - you do not have to use a lot because a few drops actually goes a long way. Be sure to massage it well into your hair and scalp. Then wrap your hair in a towel and leave it for 2 to 3 hours. After that, you can shower. Hair will be noticeably softer.

4) Daily Hair Treatment

You can also rub a few drops of Pure Argan Oil into your damp hair after a shower. Aragn oil does not have an unpleasant smell; instead, it will help protect and moisturize your hair as you go about your daily work and responsibilities.

Color Green in Islam

The color green has a special place in Islam. It is used in the decoration of mosques, the bindings of Qur'ans, the silken covers for the graves of Sufi saints, and in the flags of various Muslim countries. Green has been associated with Islam for many centuries. It is not clear why this is so. Some say green was Muhammad’s favorite color and that he wore a green cloak and turban. Others believe that it symbolizes nature and life, hence the physical manifestation of God. In the Qur'an (Surah 76:21), it is said that the inhabitants of paradise will wear green garments of fine silk. While the reference to the Qur'an is verifiable, it is not clear if other explanations are reliable or mere folklore. Regardless of its origins, the color green has been considered especially Islamic for centuries. Crusaders avoided using any green in their coats of arms, so that they could not possibly be mistaken for their Muslim opponents in the heat of battle. What to Wear to A Muslim Wedding Event?

The article today focuses on Muslim bridal dress in the blue-green color. Blue-green is a great color option for bridal dresses.

These days it is common to see Arab brides opting for all-white wedding dress ala Western style bridal dresses. I have posted Turkish style Western wedding dresses on this site before. They are obviously nice bridal dresses. But I hope Muslims understand that wearing white on their wedding day is not an Islamic tradition. White is a good color to wear, it does signify cleanliness and purity. But at the same time, it is not Islamic.

Did you know that the tradition of wearing a white wedding gown only began in the Victorian era?

Dr Leigh Summers is an expert on the history of clothes and recently told nights presenter Annie Warburton the white wedding dress was initially a status symbol and not an indictor of a woman's virtue.

Queen Victoria is generally credited with having started the white wedding dress craze.

In Victorian times, a woman who could afford an expensive white dress for a one-off occasion was thought to be at the top of her social tree.

Because delicate garments were near impossible to keep clean, a wedding dress could be worn just the once and only people with a lot of money could afford to purchase one.

"It was a clear indication you were a wealthy women and that you were marrying into wealth," Dr Summers told Annie.

Prior to Queen Victoria women used to wear every day clothes for the wedding ceremony with a white veil and Orange Blossom to indicate the significance of the event.

It was after World War II the white wedding dress became an indication of a woman's virtue.

Dr Summers said she believes the reason the tradition of the white wedding dress has survived, is due to the lack of romance and excitement in a woman's life.

Moroccan Bridal Henna Party

Henna parties for brides are common in many Muslim cultures. In Morocco, this is no exception. In Morocco, the bridal henna party, called the Beberiska ceremony, takes place the day before the wedding.

The bridal henna party is typically held for the women of the family, relatives and female friends of the bride. At the henna party, henna artists paint the hands and feet of the bride and her party with henna.

Leaves of the henna plant are crushed into a powder, which, when mixed with water, becomes a paste that will stain a person's skin orange for about two to three weeks if left on for two hours or more.

Henna is known as mehndi in India. This practice dates back to at least 2000 B.C.E., and its use in ceremonies can be found from South Asia to North Africa. In India and other countries, henna is arranged in intricate lacy or floral patterns on the hands or feet, which can mean good health, fertility, wisdom, protection or spiritual enlightenment.

In the Moroccan wedding tradition, the bride’s hands and feet are painted with intricate designs, which are usually floral and geometrical designs that are meant to ward off evil spirits, bring good luck and increase fertility. The groom's name is often hidden in the henna designs.

The bride has to leave the henna on her hands for several hours. So her female relatives will feed her food and give her drinks, and assist her with any of her needs, while the bride waits for the wet henna to dry and darken.

The bride is also entertained with music and merriment by her female guests. Delicious food is served to the guests.

Moroccan weddings are elaborate, colorful and lively events. Traditionally, the Moroccan wedding can last for several days, and there are a number of pre-wedding ceremonies that take place before the actual wedding.

We came across an excellent article, an excerpt of which is below, which illustrates the traditional Moroccan wedding:

Once a date has been set for the wedding, the real preparations begin. Five days before the matrimonial event, necessities such as a mattress and blanket are taken to the bridal chamber. There the bride is given a bath in hammam which is a sort of milk bath that is meant to purify the bride. Her negaffa (female attendants) will usually supervise the event. The negaffa - who are usually older married woman, female friends and relatives - then set about trying to beautify her. After dressing her in an elaborately decorated wedding kaftan they proceed to decorate her with heavy jewelry and darken her eyes with kohl which looks a bit like thick dark eyeliner.

The group then proceeds to have a beberiska ceremony in which the hands and feet of the bride and her party are painted with henna. The bride's designs are always the most intricate and the various floral and geometric designs are meant to ward off evil spirits, bring good luck and increase fertility. The grooms name is often hidden in the henna designs. The negaffa will usually take this opportunity to discuss the 'secrets' of marriage with the young virgin. In some ceremonies the bride will then be placed behind a curtain to symbolize her change of lifestyle. In more remote areas, this ceremony would only take place the day before the wedding. Often, a bride is not expected to do any house work until her henna has faded.

Once all this preparation is complete, food is prepared in excess to cater for unexpected guests and the festivities begin. In times past, the men and woman would celebrate these festivities at separate locations. At some point in the evening, the groom would leave to make his way towards the bridal party accompanied by a group of friends who sing, beat drums and dance. The bride would be lifted up on a circular cushion or table and the groom on the shoulders of his friends. The two would then be carried to the bridal chamber where they would be expected to consummate their marriage. The bridal party would then examine their sheets for signs of blood to confirm the bride's virginity. The two would journey to their new home and the bride would circle her home three times before becoming the keeper of her new hearth.

Today things have changed somewhat. Although the hamman bath is still used quite often in more rural areas, it is sometimes completely overlooked in the cities and towns. And though young brides are still quite happy to don their ceremonial kaftans, these are now more often shop bought because modern machinery has caused hand-made kaftans to be considered an expensive rarity.

Moroccan weddings are lavish and colorful events. The wedding outfits worn by the bride, usually a caftan, is equally colorful, in all pretty hues. For instance, the orange caftan looks like a piece of art work, with hand made detailed work. The caftan is a long cotton or silk cloak buttoned down the front, with full sleeves, reaching to the ankles and worn with a sash. In Morocco, the caftan (or kaftan) is the national (original) dress, worn only by the Moroccan women. Moroccan men wear a hooded long cloak called the Jellaba.

The Moroccan caftan (kaftan) can be casual to formal (similar to a western dress) depending on the materials used. They are usually worn at dinner parties, baby showers, engagement parties and weddings, essentially any gathering where women gather together. The caftan consists usually of two pieces, or sometimes more. There is an inner piece (long dress) and an outer covering (long cloak) and a sash or belt completes the look.

I am so elated to have found some spectacular modest Western-styled wedding dress designs that meets most Muslim brides requirements of both modesty and beauty! I have found several Turkish websites that design Western-styled wedding dresses, but most of them do not deliver to the US. And besides, it can get pretty costly when you convert the rates, and add shipping and handling. Phew!

But I've found a website in the US that makes modest wedding dresses its main product line, and it also has retail stores around the US. They are called Eternity Gowns.

If you wear the hijab, some of these designs allow you to easily incorporate your scarf without any difficulty. And if you do not wear the hijab, but are looking for something modest anyway, hopefully these designs will inspire you!

Before you can start planning your wedding day, you should take the time to find out about the necessary Islamic requirements needed to conduct the wedding.

This article will provide some information on the necessary Islamic requirements for a Muslim wedding.

The marriage is called a "Nikkah" in Arabic. The marriage between a man and a woman is considered as a sacred contract. The Quran verses that describe marriage in Islam can be found in Surah 4 (An-Nisa, Women). However, the sacred marriage contract is not irrevocable as in Catholicism - divorce is permitted in Islam.

The primary requirements needed for the marriage are as follows:

1) Mutual agreement (Ijab-O-Qubul) by the bride and the groom.
2) Two adult and sane witnesses.
3) Mahr (marriage-gift or dowry) to be paid by the groom to the bride either immediately (muajjal) or deferred (muakhkhar), or a combination of both.

The secondary requirements needed are as follows:
1) Legal guardian (wakeel) representing the bride.
2) Written marriage contract ("Aqd-Nikah) signed by the bride and the groom and witnesses by two adult and sane witnesses.
3) Qadi (State appointed Muslim judge) or Ma'zoon (a responsible person officiating the marriage ceremony).
4) Khutba-tun-Nikah to solemnize the marriage.

Marriage Contract

Both parties mutually agree and enter into a marriage contract. Both bride and groom have the liberty to define various terms and conditions of their liking and make them a part of this contract. At the wedding, which can take place pretty much anywhere, the bride and groom are separated in different rooms. They may or may not be able to see each other, depending on how conservative the families are.

An officiant he asks the spouses-to-be if they consent to the marriage and if they are marrying of their own free will (a representative called a wali, usually the bride's father, answers the officiant's questions on the bride's behalf). This is equivalent of the father of the bride walking the bride down the aisle, and giving away his daughter, in Western cultures. The couple signs the marriage contract or license, with witnesses observing. The officiant brings the pair together and pronounces them husband and wife.

Mahr, Muslim Dowry Given to Bride

The marriage-gift (Mahr) is a divine injunction. The giving of mahr to the bride by the groom is an essential part of the contract.

'And give the women (on marriage) their mahr as a (nikah) free gift" (Quran 4:4)

Mahr is a token commitment of the husband's responsibility and may be paid in cash, property or movable objects to the bride herself. The amount of mahr is not legally specified, however, moderation according to the existing social norm is recommended. The mahr may be paid immediately to the bride at the time of marriage, or deferred to a later date, or a combination of both. The deferred mahr however, falls due in case of death or divorce.

Marriage Sermon

The assembly of nikah is addressed with a marriage sermon (khutba-tun-nikah) by the Muslim officiating the marriage. Usually the Qadi (state appointed Muslim judge) does this, but any trust worthy practicing Muslim can conduct the nikah ceremony, as Islam does not advocate priesthood.

Prophet Muhammad (S) made it his tradition (sunnah) to have marriage sermon delivered in the assembly to solemnize the marriage. The sermon invites the bride and the groom, as well as the participating guests in the assembly to a life of piety, mutual love, kindness, and social responsibility.

The Khutbah-tun-Nikah begins with the praise of Allah. His help and guidance is sought. The Muslim confession of faith that 'There is none worthy of worship except Allah and Muhammad is His servant and messenger" is declared. The three Quranic verses (Quran 4:1, 3:102, 33:70-71).

The Muslim officiating the marriage ceremony concludes the ceremony with prayer (Dua) for bride, groom, their respective families, the local Muslim community, and the Muslim community at large (Ummah)

Marriage (nikah) is considered as an act of worship (ibadah). It is virtuous to conduct it in a Mosque keeping the ceremony simple. The marriage ceremony is a social as well as a religious activity. Islam advocates simplicity in ceremonies and celebrations.

Prophet Muhammad (S) considered simple weddings the best weddings:

'The best wedding is that upon which the least trouble and expense is bestowed". (Mishkat).

The Marriage Banquet (Walima)

The groom holds a banquet called a walima. The relatives, neighbors, and friends are invited in order to make them aware of the marriage.
